Play final reflection
The play is called “The curious Incident of the dog in the nighttime” by Mark Haddon. I viewed it November 18th on YouTube. I also saw willjam’s solo performance because he sent it to me.
The story is about a boy with autism. He finds his neighbors dog dead in her front yard with a pitchfork in it. Christopher goes to the dog and holds it and a cop comes and questions him, he ends up having to spend a couple hours in jail. His dad comes and picks him up from jail and tells him not to try to solve the mystery of who killed the dog Which of course makes Christopher want to very badly especially because a part of his autism is that he loves a project. He starts asking around the the neighborhood to try to find out who killed Mrs Shears dog and he finds out that Mr shears left her 2 years ago. Christopher’s father finds out that he’s been asking questions around the neighborhood and tells him to stop again. Of course Christopher keeps on trying. One of his neighbors tells Christopher that his mother and mr shears we’re having an affair. Christopher thought his mother was dead. Christopher’s dad finds his detective boom and gets mad and takes it away. Christopher searches through his dads stuff to find his book. Instead he finds a bunch of letters that had been written to him by his mother. He reads some of them and finds out that his mother has been alive this whole time and his dad has been lying to him. His dad apologizes for lying to him and also confesses that he killed mrs shears dog because he was jealous that she didn’t want to be with him. He decides that it’s not safe to live with his dad anymore. He decides to run away but he has never been anywhere by himself before. He runs away and tries to get to his mothers house in London and he’s overwhelmed but he eventually gets there. He finds his mother was living with mr shears. His father shows up at his mothers house and demands Christopher comes and lives with him and Christopher goes back with him because he’s scared of mr shears and he wants to take his test. A week later his mom moves back and he starts living with her. His dad tries to gain his trust back by buying him a dog and he starts spending more time at his dads house again. He takes his exam under stress lack of sleep and an empty stomach. He gets a great grade on his test and feels like he can do anything after traveling to London alone and getting a great grade on his big test.
Some themes of this story are courage, and personal growth. It shows these themes because Christopher had to show a lot of courage to do the things he was able to do in the play such as search for who killed the dog, go off on his own to find his mom, and get a great grade on his big test. It shows personal growth because at the beginning of the play he wouldn't be able to go out on his own like he did and handle himself in the way he did.
The mood of the play from what I saw was very serious and I feel the lighting contributed a lot to the seriousness of the drama in the acting of the play, like when Ed is yelling at him and the lights get red. In the YouTube performance I watched Christopher seemed like the most important character because there was a lot of scenes where it was just him on stage.
A scene that was very memorable for me was when Christopher's dad confesses for killing the dog and apologizes for lying. Willjam was so emotional with his words and the way he was saying this and his facial expressions and hand gestures and the way the spotlight was shining on him. This is the reason he was my favorite actor in the play. He delivered all his lines with great and appropriate emotion. I liked the play and the storyline and the actors from what I saw the only thing I didn't like is the way the story ends I feel like the ending should've been more interesting because the plot the whole way through was interesting until the end.
